At St.Vincent’s, we follow the recommended Letters and Sounds phonics programme.
Children begin this programme when they enter school in Foundation Stage and continue with it through to the end of Key Stage One.
Sessions are taught for approximately 20 minutes per day by class teachers and teaching assistants, and are differentiated according to ability level.
Pupils are assessed regularly on their progression in Phonics and parents are informed through regular contact in their child’s home-school link book.
During Year One, children needing additional support, are offered a place on the ELS programme, which has been a highly successful intervention programme, run for a number of years. Should your child be eligible for this programme, parents are invited to a meeting in the Autumn term.
At the end of Year One, pupils are assessed using the Phonics Screening check, to ensure they are working at age-related levels. Should individuals need a little extra support with this, they are offered additional support in Year 2.
